Event description

The immersive Melbourne hit returns to transform the Botanic Gardens after dark with a reimagined trail and brand-new installations. Visitors to Lightscape make their way along a winding trail through Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne’s landscape, awash in artistic lighting design. Along the way, they’ll encounter large lighting sculptures, colourful lighting effects and an accompanying soundscape.

Relaxed sessions are for anyone who would benefit from experiencing the event in a
more relaxed environment. This can include, but is not limited to, people with autism,
sensory sensitivities, Tourette's syndrome, learning disabilities or dementia, as well as
people living with mobility challenges, anxiety or people who have experienced trauma.

Relaxed sessions will take place on:
Wednesday 3 July at 5.15pm
Wednesday 24 July at 5.30pm

Wheelchair Accessibility

The trail is designed so that it can be navigated on paths. There are some paths whose gradients are steep and audience members may benefit from assistance. Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne has a limited number of manual wheelchairs that can be loaned, free of charge. Wheelchairs are available to book through our website.

If the weather conditions prohibit the trail from being fully accessible for those needing mobility devices (wheelchairs, walkers, etc.), consideration will be made on a case-by-case basis to allow for tickets to be transferred to alternate dates. If you have particular access requirements, please call (03) 9252 2300 for further enquiries.

Travellers Aid Companion Service

In 2024, Travellers Aid Companion Service volunteers will be available to support people with disability or those with additional mobility requirements travelling to Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne for the two relaxed sessions of Lightscape, Wednesday 3 July 5.15pm and Wednesday 24 July 5.30pm.

4 Companion volunteers will be available for both of these relaxed sessions, with 2 in the Visitor Centre and 2 on the Lightscape trail, should audience members require assistance part way through their journey. These volunteers can provide wheelchair assistance or personal guidance assistance during the tour.

Bookings for the companion service for the relaxed sessions are not required, however only 4 volunteers will be available to assist audience members.

Travellers Aid Companion Service is strictly only available for the two relaxed sessions for Lightscape 2024.

Visual Story

A visual story will be available for those that request it by emailing lightscape@rbg.vic.gov.au. This guide will help audience members feel more prepared as it maps out the journey for them ahead of time. The visual story is available to those attending one of the relaxed sessions.

Changing Places

Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne has a registered Changing Places bathroom located close to our Visitor Centre, near the entrance of Observatory Gate (and the entrance of Lightscape), on the ground level next to the public toilets, just opposite Jardin Tan cafe. Available 24/7 for users with their own MLAK, alternatively, a key can be borrowed from the Visitor Centre by one of the stewards during Lightscape event hours.
