An outcome of The Guildhouse Fellowship, South Australian expressionist artist Tom Phillips presents his newest exhibition, 'Running on Empty', highlighting issues of social justice and capturing everyday experiences of loneliness, alienation, vulnerability and hardship.
"I see myself as a paint brush warrior and social commentator, as I work mainly in an expressive figurative style. As an artist, I believe art should say something about the world that we live in. Therefore my role is not to provide answers but to question the society that we live in."
"My paintings have always been about the human experience and its struggles."
- Tom Phillips
The exhibition runs from July 27 until October 31 2024, and is free to visit at AGSA.
The Guildhouse Fellowship is presented in partnership with the Art Gallery of South Australia and the James and Diana Ramsay Foundation. It is valued at over $50,000, and is awarded annually to one South Australian mid-career visual artist, craftsperson or designer.
This fellowship is intended for artists who have moved beyond the early years of their practice; they have a distinct artistic expression, and seek an expansive opportunity to explore, research and create. It is awarded to artists who can demonstrate its instrumentality to their arts practice – and thus – their contribution to the ambition and artistic excellence of the visual arts sector in South Australia.
