Yasemin is a multi-faceted creative who works as a writer, director, photographer, actress, artist, producer, and comedian. Born in Australia to Turkish immigrant and Muslim parents her ancestry informs her practice. As such she creates projects that uplift, engage and promote diversity.
Yasemin is a recent recipient of The Mill’s Sponsored Studio program with an exhibition for SALA called Alchemical which explored Yasemin’s experience living with chronic illness and disability. Alchemical was a SALA Don Dunstan award finalist, and winner of the SALA Photographic prize with an exhibition outcome at Praxis gallery for SALA 2024 called Axis Mundi.
Axis Mundi is a video, photography and installation work that’s a finalist for the Don Dunstan award second year in a row and she is also a finalist for the Guildhouse Artists choice award. As part of SALA 2024 she’s also showing photos as part of the SALA exhibition for Melbourne Street Open air gallery.
Across her career most recently she has been selected as a: Adelaide Film Festival & SAMSTAG EXPAND lab participant and a recipient for the $100,000 Expand Moving Image Commission, performed a preview of her show ’sick bitch’ for Midsumma and Pride 2024, Midsumma Pathways participant for Disabled Artists 2020, AFTRS Talent Camp participant, MakeSpace digital theatre residency at ActNow Theatre 2021, FELTdark recipient 2022, SA COVID support Fringe grant 2020 ‘The illest’, Adelaide Fringe Artist fund recipient 2021, and a mural for My Lover Cindi through the Adelaide Fringe. As a video artist she has represented Australian video art for D’art best of Australian international video art tour and won awards at festivals. She was a mentor for the 2024 Canberra theatre centre new ideas lab, and Platform lab participant as part of the Sydney Film fest, and a finalist for 2024 Australians in Film program called Untapped. She has also worked in app development, web3 and crypto for orgs like Ethereum.
Her works like her one woman show about disability ‘the illest’ have been profiled in Frankie magazine, the Guardian, Triple J, SBS, Arts Hub, Junkie, and the ABC.
