About the opportunity

Sisters in Crime is offering $500 in prize money for the Liz Navratil Award for Best Story with a Disabled Protagonist. It’s part of its annual short story competition, the Scarlet Stiletto Awards, now in its 31st year. The Queensland Chapter, which is sponsoring the award, set up the award in 2014 to honour fellow member Liz Navratil who was killed whilst crossing the road in her electric wheelchair.

The idea for a national award for short stories, written by Australian women and featuring a strong female protagonist, was cooked up over a few glasses of wine in 1994 at a convenors’ meeting in St Kilda, Victoria. The purpose was to support and unearth new talent.

Entry fee:

$25 for non- members

$20 for Sisters in Crime members
